Discovering the secrets of Canada (II)

If you’ve been wanting to know more about Canada, especially if you plan to travel there soon, you’re in luck. If in Discovering the secrets of Canada (I) we recommend the essential places to visit in the western area of Canada, now it is the turn to know the eastern area, the closest to the Atlantic coast.

Niagara Falls

Probably the best-known tourist place in Canada. Niagara Falls are located in Niagara, a kind of river that connects lakes Erie and Ontario located on the border between the two North American countries.

It is possible to see them from the Canadian or the American side, but it is the Canadian where the most tourists are concentrated, because it allows a better view. In addition, the area is full of hotels and different places created for the mass of visitors who come every year. Especially known is the Maid of the Mist («The Maiden of the Mist»), a ship that sails under the falls.

The impressive Niagara Falls are one of the most visited places in Canada.

Montmorency Falls

Following the same theme, just over 10 kilometres from Quebec City are those of Montmorency, which boast to be (by 30 meters) higher than Niagara Falls.

The Montmorency falls are especially striking in winter, when they freeze and offer a great show to those who walk on the suspension bridge that crosses just above them.

These waterfalls are within the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency, also recommended to visit by car or walk, making any of its spectacular routes.

Quebec

In the French-speaking part of Canada, we have two of its best-known cities: Quebec and Montreal. This first, the one with the most French heritage, is also a place full of charm. One of those cities that invite you to stroll with tranquillity and get lost in its streets. It is the only walled city in all of North America and its historic centre, Old Quebec, has been a World Heritage Site since 1985.

Its symbol and most beautiful building is the Château Frontenac, a luxury hotel designed as a castle that it is said to be the most photographed hotel in the world. What an honour! In addition, it has the beautiful basilica of The Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine.

Montreal

Despite not giving name to the province, Montreal is the largest city in the Quebec region, the main town among the French-speaking and the second most populated in all of Canada.

The European influence is also strong here and we find buildings such as the Basilica of Notre Dame, a jewel of neo-Gothic style. If you visit Montreal you have to walk through its old town, which preserves some cobblestone streets and has a great cultural life; and do not forget to go to the Old Port and photograph the Clock Tower. This is a memorial to the Canadian sailors who died in the First World War.

Toronto

As the largest city in the country, Toronto is therefore also the epicentre of the Canadian tourism sector. The offer of museums to visit, places to go or gastronomy to try is immense.

The Toronto Islands stand out, islands that enjoy a varied leisure offer from which you can take the best photos of the city. Climb to the CN Tower, Toronto’s high point; visit the impressive Casa Loma Museum; see a typical hockey game or buy in one of the best markets in the world, the St. Lawrence Market, are just some of the possibilities of a city that everyone falls in love with when steps on it.

Ottawa

In the eastern part of Canada, we have another of the most well-known cities and the state capital: Ottawa. We finish this review for the highlights of the eastern part of the country with a place that is characterized by its political life and for being one of the best places to live because of the low levels of unemployment.

In the tourist section, we find next to the Ottawa River the Hill of the Parliament, where is the Canadian parliamentary, in an impressive building of gothic style. A good idea is to navigate the Canal de Rideau (only possible in summer) or walk around, always full of groups of people who come out to enjoy the good weather when it appears. From the same chain as the hotel that we mentioned in Quebec, in Otawa the Fairmont family owns the Fairmont Château Laurier, equally incredible. Moreover, if you like art, we recommend the National Gallery of Art, where you will find very important works of all styles.

It is clear that Canada is one of the countries with the greatest cultural and natural wealth in the world, since it also has a high level of life and education that has allowed it to care for and value its heritage.
